Don't {Pool} Fence Me In

Well Christmas is just about here. And with Christmas in Queensland comes heat and with heat comes the desire for water. Many a home owner has caved and dug themselves a pool after a 40+ degree summer's day.

And to welcome the season further the Queensland Government has passed 150 new pool fence regulations for pool owners. Changes must be immediately adhered to or the owner risks fine for non compliance. I understand the need for regulations and the protection of our future generations. If these rules could save one child I think they would be worth while. But is this politics gone mad or another council money grab?

Here are some of the rules that have been bought to our attention to date:
  • Your pool area must be free and clear from and movable object such as: chairs, tables, swings, and ladders any object that can be moved up to fence to gain access to climb over fence.
  • All trees vines shrubs that can be climbed must be cut out or removed within 1.5 meters from pool fence.
  • Minimum height for pool fence should be no less than 1200 millimeters ( 1.2 meters).
  • If fence is next to an incline or bank that encroach fence horizontal or vertical must be leveled back from fence to 1.5 meters.
For more information contact your local council or email us.

Spring Update...

Dawn - Phone camera... Not a great shot
Well the months have flown by since last update, the colder months have come and gone with a friendly reminder in the bright and often bleak overcast spring mornings from time to time.

The work has not stopped rolling in for the past 9 weeks the Blue Sky Yards team have been erecting 6 foot (old scale) or 1800mm (new scale) treated hardwood paling fences for customers in the Araluren Heights neighborhood of east Gympie. With a landscaping job squeezed  in somewhere in between laying down salt and pepper rock in the court yard and erecting raised garden beds mulched with wood chip.
Work gets underway
Dealing with a tricky corner
Somewhere along the way we also managed a timber retaining wall or two that came up a treat with a little natural timber decking oil . We do this to preserve the timber for up to 2 years and then reapply to using a high pressure washer to strip the oil off. Using this technique there is no need for regular maintenance  What a house holders maintenance dream!
Weeded, Very nice!
So now is the time for that often neglected and important pieces of yard equipment to be serviced at you local workshop. And which pieces of equipment you are probably wondering? It's the lawn mower and brush cutter. And last summer it copped a flogging at my place. There is something very Queensland about mowing the lawn one minute and the next the heavens would open pouring rain giving the grass just what it wanted most to undo all your good work. All you can do is keep trying to keep your house looking good and to say I'm proud of where I live.

So that is the spring update.

Timber Stairs...

Check out one of our latest jobs. The owner requested stairs to the front of the home that would enable better access for guests of the tenants. The steep yard and even steeper driveway had been causing problems for a while. After discussing what they were after and agreeing on a start date and quote we were underway and completed within the month.

And let's just say. we are proud of the result and it turns out the neighbours love it and want one for themselves. For more information on the building process or to get a quote for your yard contact us at blueskyyayrds@gmail.com and we'll get back to you.

In the Beginning

Today I start my new business venture. The business itself is not new but me doing it full time will be. I have taken the opportunity to dive head first into the business.

Blue Sky Yards (as a name) was my wife's idea. I wasn't a fan at first. In fact I thought that she had gone bonkers.

But who doesn't love a lush green lawn, beautiful gardens and the time to enjoy them under a big blue sky. Plus we do everything under the sun when it comes to you having the backyard that you want.

And as we start to do more jobs in garden landscaping etc I look forward to posting pics. Maybe even a clean up or two. Photos will be care of my wife and her new camera. There will also be tips and tricks for what to plant at what time and what there may be to do in your garden.

Enjoy the ride.
